Ethnic Karen fighters attack military bases in Myanmar
(MENAFN) Over the weekend, ethnic Karen fighters launched attacks on military bases in eastern Myanmar, causing hundreds of people—including more than 100 Myanmar junta soldiers—to flee into neighboring Thailand, local media and Thai officials reported.
The conflict began late Saturday when the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) targeted junta-controlled bases in Karen State. Thailand’s military confirmed that approximately 100 Myanmar soldiers crossed the border, where they were disarmed, received medical treatment, and were processed according to international standards.
Additionally, Thai authorities stated that over 400 civilians fled across the border and were relocated to secure shelters within Thailand.
Similar incidents occurred in May, when 62 Myanmar soldiers fled to Thailand following rebel attacks near the border.
Meanwhile, reports from inside Myanmar revealed that a deadly airstrike hit a monastery in Sagaing Region on Friday, killing at least 30 people and worsening the country’s humanitarian crisis.
The KNLA, one of Myanmar’s largest ethnic armed groups, has been fighting for Karen self-determination since 1949 and mainly operates in the conflict-prone Karen State located in the country’s south and southeast.
